The original “Star Wars” trilogy will make its debut on DVD Sept. 21 as a four-disc boxed set from Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
The trilogy is perhaps the most anticipated set of films to debut in the DVD format. “Star Wars — Episode IV, A New Hope,” “Star Wars — Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back” and “Star Wars — Episode VI, Return of the Jedi” are currently the top-three most requested DVDs on Amazon.com.
The VHS versions of the first three films have sold more than 70 million copies worldwide, according to Fox.
The DVDs will feature the special-edition versions of the films that were re-released in theaters in 1997; the original versions of the films will not be included. Widescreen and full-screen sets will be sold separately. Details about special features have not been revealed.
The set is expected to be priced at about $50.
