U.K. mobile carrier Orange has launched a new package of mobile TV channels, including two music-video services from U.K. media group EMAP, as part of its 3G (third-generation) offering.
Kerrang! and Kiss, the EMAP-owned cable and satellite-delivered TV channels, are respectively targeted at heavy rock and urban music consumers, respectively.
In addition to being received in TV homes, the two channels’ 24-hour programming will now also be picked up simultaneously on the smart-phone handsets of Orange’s 3G subscribers.
The mobile-music channels are part of Orange TV’s new nine-channel general entertainment package. They will be added to the existing seven non-music channels that were introduced in May.
“It is a much more passive experience than downloading individual videos,” explains Debbie Tonroe, Orange’s London-based head of commercial development. “You download an Orange TV player to your device and subscribe to all the 16 channels for £10.00 ($17.70) a month.”
She says the transmission takes place along the carrier’s network in the form of live streaming. New subscribers are entitled to watch the TV services for free during the first seven days.
