It’s a twisted tale of three little mermaids in Orange Caramel’s “Catallena” video. The quirky female trio — a sub-unit of sexy girl group After School — returns with a new disco-inspired single that sees the girls dressing up as sea creatures and sushi.
“Catallena” brings a Bollywood-inspired disco beat and Pakistani folk samples to back the girls’ light-hearted coos; a nice accompaniment to the trio’s internationally-flavored past hits like “Bangkok City” and “Shanghai Romance.” Slightly straying from K-pop’s heteronormative love lyrics, Orange Caramel sing about being intrigued by the alluring “Catallena” woman — even though they aren’t attracted to girls.
While the track is a mishmash of peculiar sonic elements, the video is where things get really weird. Watch above as Raina, Nana and Lizzy begin as gorgeous mermaids before they’re packaged into cheap bites of sushi. The visuals continue to get hilariously strange as they find themselves enamored with a drag-queen octopus character — who is really Korean comedian Kim Dae Sung, famous for dressing as a female on popular South Korean TV show “Gag Man.”
It all concludes when the OC gals come to a restaurant (in human form) only to eat themselves (as sushi) while crying. It’s all ridiculously wacky, but makes one wonder if there’s a deeper — perhaps darker? — hidden message behind the colorful antics.
“Catallena” is the title track from a new three-track EP released by Orange Caramel. It follows the girls’ full-length album “Lipstick,” dropped in summer 2012, which saw its title track peak at No. 2 on the K-Pop Hot 100.
