Boy band One Direction’s “Midnight Memories,” released in late November, is the top-selling album of 2013 in the U.K.
Its sales overtook Emeli Sande’s “Our Version of Events,” which had topped the 2012 sales chart, late in the year.
“Midnight Memories,” the third full-length album from the band, has sold almost 700,000 copies as of Monday, according to the Official Charts Company, which tracks music sales in Britain.
The album from Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik claimed the top spot by topping Sande’s sales of 683,000 copies in 2013. Overall, her album has now sold more than 2.07 million copies in the U.K., according to the Official Charts Company.
Released on Nov. 25, “Midnight Memories” is also the fastest-selling album of 2013 and the fastest-selling One Direction album so far.
“This tops an amazing year for us!” said Payne. “We’re so excited to have the biggest selling album in the U.K. this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of.”
Last week, the band’s home entertainment release of the movie “This Is Us,” produced by Morgan Spurlock (“Super Size Me”), became the fastest- selling music DVD/Blu-ray in British history with 270,000 copies sold in the first three days. That beat a previous record set by Michael Jackson’s “This Is It” in 2010 by 10,000 copies. In theaters, the film has grossed more than $60 million worldwide.
Full U.K. music sales data are expected to be released later in the week.
