The boys of One Direction were among the night’s biggest winners at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, held Sunday (Aug. 11) in Los Angeles.
The British boyband was the recipient of four different awards, including Choice Summer Tour, Choice Group, Choice Single (“Live While We’re Young”) and Choice Love Song (“Little Things”). Harry, Louis, Zayn, Liam and Niall were all on hand to accept their giant surfboards that act as the ceremony’s awards — especially considering they opened the telecast with a performance of their newest single, “Best Song Ever.”

However, the emotional centerpiece of the evening belonged to Lea Michele and the cast of “Glee.” Michele, making her first public appearance since the death of co-star Cory Monteith, tearfully thanked the show’s fans for their support during trying times following Monteith’s July 13 death of an overdose. She won the ceremony’s award for Choice TV Actress: Comedy, emerging after the rest of the cast accepted the award for Choice TV Comedy.
Demi Lovato scored two wins for Choice Female Artist and Choice TV Personality, while performing “Made in the USA” with the Jonas Brothers’ Nick Jonas on drums. A duo of awards for Choice R&B Artist and Choice Summer Music Star were the prize for Bruno Mars, who accepted his award while on tour. Then there was Miley Cyrus, who earned the coveted Choice Summer Song for “We Can’t Stop,” beating out “Blurred Lines,” “Get Lucky” and more in the process.
“Cruise,” the crossover hit for Florida Georgia Line featuring Nelly, may have been one of the songs that lost out to “We Can’t Stop,” but that didn’t keep the country duo and rapper from performing the song live, flanked by an array of scantily clad women dressed for the summer.
Other big wins of the evening: Emblem3’s Choice Breakout Group nod, Nick Jonas’s Acuvue Inspire award for his diabetes activism, Ed Sheeran for Choice Breakout Artist, Selena Gomez’s “Come and Get It,” which scored a victory for Choice Breakout Song, and Paramore’s 10th Teen Choice Award, getting the award for Choice Rock Band. The latter band was part of the final live performance of the evening, singing “Still Into You.”

TEARS FOR CORY: When the cast of “Glee” stepped onstage to accept the award for Choice TV Comedy, one knew a reference to the show’s fallen star, Cory Monteith, was imminent. Sure enough, Amber Riley and Jenna Ushkowitz honored Monteith, Ushkowitz saying that the actor “would’ve wanted to dedicate this award to you guys, so our condolences to all of you as well, and we love you so much.”
But the emotional roller coaster wasn’t over yet. Though she wasn’t present for the ensemble’s award, Lea Michele came out to accept her Choice TV Actress: Comedy award, trying to hold back tears as she thanked the show’s fans for their support during the ordeal in her first public appearance since Monteith’s death. “Whether you knew him personally or just as Finn Hudson, he became a part of all of our hearts and that’s where he’ll stay forever,” Michele said. “So thank you guys so much. Thank you,” In a night full of off-the-wall moments, it was nice to feel grounded.
TEEN TWERKATHON: At the end of the telecast, the Teen Choice Awards decided to set the world record for most people twerking at once. They even had officials on hand to commemorate this glorious occasion. If you weren’t a fan of the new dance craze, you might have turned off your TV prematurely. But it was certainly a sight to see hundreds of bodies grinding up on each other on a show for teenagers.
PERFECT GAG: ADAM DEVINE. The actor, who stars as the “Pitch Perfect” villain (if you can really call him that), Bumper Allen, and as part of Comedy Central’s “Workaholics,” received an award for Choice Villain. To fit into his scheming, devious ways, Devine decided to photobomb the ENTIRE night, whether it was on the red carpet beforehand or during the telecast itself. The best part of this was when his intentions hadn’t yet been declared on the broadcast, so when Devine appeared behind Gabby Douglas during her awards speech, the weird factor was upped tremendously. And it was hilarious.
K.E.Y.T.A.R. F.T.W.: Florida Georgia Line had a pretty solid performance of “Cruise,” a showing bumped in excitement by Nelly’s appearance during his verse of the remix, wearing his trademark St. Louis Cardinals cap he’s been rocking after all these years. But the real stars of this performance? Homeboy was ROCKING that keytar. Seriously, is it too late to make this year the #YearoftheKeytar?
