One Direction singer Harry Styles showed his support for Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team, in front of thousands of fans during the group’s Aug. 27 concert in St. Louis.
Styles was sporting Sam’s St. Louis Rams jersey (number 96) while performing with 1D at the city’s 67,200-capacity Edward Jones Dome, which also serves as the home of the NFL’s Rams.

Sam caught wind that Styles was wearing his jersey and thanked the singer for his support through Twitter on Wednesday evening. The following day, the official Twitter account for the Rams tweeted a photo of Styles wearing the jersey.

Sam is likely appreciating the support now more than ever, as he was cut by the Rams on Saturday. Despite the bad news, however, the football player tweeted some encouraging words: “The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I’ve always known. The journey continues.”
Sam made national headlines in May when he kissed his boyfriend on TV after receiving news that he’d been drafted in the seventh round. He announced that he was gay in February.
