Rap duo the Cool Kids teamed up with Blended Babies and Lorine Chia for an energetic new track, “On My Own.” Listen below.
The song centers around a warped, vicious guitar line. The beat is distressed — full of distorted drums that sound like they’re being played too loud in your neighbor’s garage. The sound has no middle, just a rumbling low end and a splashing cymbal skidding along the top.
“On My Own” opens with a strong statement of negation: “let me get a no!” In a quick burst of call and response, someone shouts “No.” Then the rappers start to pile dense bundles of syllables around the beat. The track is a declaration of independence, but it’s also a testament to the value of teamwork.
The Cool Kids’ last album, When Fish Ride Bicycles, came out in 2011.
