There are few, grander prizes in the Australian music scene than winning Triple J’s Hottest 100, an annual poll often lauded as the “world’s largest music democracy.”
Ocean Alley knows that winning feeling. The six-piece from Sydney’s Northern Beaches came in at No. 1 on the most recent countdown with “Confidence,” a groovy track lifted from their sophomore album Chiaroscuro. It was the bookmakers’ favorite and the people’s favorite. Everyone was into it.
The good vibes flowed on with Ocean Alley’s “Stained Glass,” and now “Infinity,” which is due out this Thursday (June 6).
With its warm keys and bluesy guitar tones, “Infinity” is a sunny, laid-back tune, with lyrics addressing perseverance, patience and the pursuit of personal growth. Billboard.com premieres the song today.
Ocean Alley toured the U.S. last year with singer and multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana, and are now on their very own headline tour of North America, which is currently winding its way across Canada.
“We’ve been busy touring all over the world and writing music since the Hottest 100 at the beginning of the year,” reads a statement from the band emailed to Billboard. It’s all been “a bit of a whirlwind,” they admit, “but we are strapped in and ready for it.”
The Aussies are admittedly preoccupied with life on the road, but they’re grabbing every possible chance to work on new material. “It will all be put together eventually when we are happy with what we’ve got. We are just stoked to be performing and writing while we tour. In that way it’s a good environment for creativity. It’s all happening at once and if you can harness what that means then you can write something that’s captivating and interesting, and that’s exactly how we feel about ‘Infinity’.”
