With three nods, Oasis leads the nominations for the 13th annual Q Awards, to be held Oct. 21 at the Ex-Saatchi Gallery in London. The band is vying for the “best act in the world today” honor — an award it has taken four times — and best live act, while “The Hindu Times” (Big Brother/Sony), which bowed at No. 1 in the U.K. in April, is up for best single.
Australia’s the Vines will vie for best new act, while the band’s “Highly Evolved” (Heavenly/EMI) is up for best album. The Red Hot Chili Peppers are up for best album and single for “By the Way” (Warner Bros.) and its title track, while Coldplay is nominated for best act in the world today and best album for “A Rush of Blood to the Head” (Parlophone).
The awards are voted on by readers of organizer Q magazine and users of its affiliated Web sites (including the magazine’s Q4Music.com site) and digital TV channels. U.K.’s Channel 4 will air an hour-long special of the event the following night.
In other award show news, the Brit Awards committee today (Oct. 15) announced the creation of a new award category for the 2003 edition of the event. Best British urban act will replace best British video at the awards show, to be held Feb. 20 at Earls Court. The British newcomer category and its international counterpart will be rebranded as British and international “breakthrough artist.”
In another break with recent tradition, the show will be broadcast by the ITV Network later on the night of the show, instead of its usual edited transmission 24 hours later.
