Notting Hill Music Group has acquired the U.S. rights to the songwriting catalog of the late Steve Marriott, former frontman and songwriter for ’60s pop acts Small Faces and Humble Pie.
The London-based publishing company acquired the rights from Chris France, who represents Steve Marriott Licensing Ltd, the company founded after the artist’s death to handle all commercial considerations relating to his catlog and copyrights. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Works covered in the pact include songwriting credits on the Small Faces’ U.K. chart-topper “All or Nothing,” and hits “Itchycoo Park,” “Tin Soldier” and “Here Comes The Nice,” all co-written with bandmate Ronnie Lane, who died in 1997.
Marriott exited the Small Faces in late 1968 and went on to establish Humble Pie. He re-formed the Small Faces in 1977, without his former songwriting partner Lane, and recorded two unsuccessful albums. He then re-formed Humble Pie in 1980, but again met with limited success. He died in a house fire on April 20, 1991 at the age of 44.
Brokered out of the Notting Hill’s L.A. office, the acquisition heralds the first of many such deals, according to group co-founder and president Peter Chalcraft.
“Our U.S. office has been incredibly successful for some time in signing copyrights for the world ex-U.S. but we now have the at source infrastructure to sign things to U.S. only deals and hope to be very active in this area in the future,” he comments in a statement.
Notting Hill launched its U.S. division in 2003. The firm was formed in 1990 as the international repertoire division of Japan’s Nippon Television Music. It became Notting Hill Music after a management buyout in 1993.
