2017 is the year of many firsts for emerging singer Noah Cyrus, including her debut at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night (May 7).
This latest appearance comes after Miley’s younger sister made her late-night television premiere on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Just two weeks later, in February, the 17-year-old’s debut single, “Make Me (Cry)” featuring Labrinth, hit no. 46 on the Hot 100 chart. After her first-ever iHeartRadio Awards performance in March, she headed down to Coachella to perform the future bass track “Chasing Colors” with collaborators Marshmello and Ookay.
Before she hits the Shrine Auditorium stage for the MTV awards show, where she will most likely perform her latest single, “Stay Together,” Cyrus walked the red carpet in a relaxed silk black suit from Baja East. According to stylist Sydney Lopez, the New York-based designers were one of the first to reach out (along with Marc Jacobs) to dress Cyrus when the two started working together.
“She tried on this suit and there was a piece of me that was like ’I don’t know,’ but then she started to pose in it and we just fell in love with it. The high waist drop-crotch silk pant and open blazer kimono jacket are so clean, relaxed and cool together,” says Lopez. “It’s fun for her to be comfortable but also look really dope, which I think the Baja East boys are great at.”
To enhance the sporty nature of the outfit, Cyrus is wearing a silk triangle bra with a thicker band on the bottom, custom-designed by Lopez’s tailor to match the suit. To finish off this sleek look, Cyrus is wearing a pair of silver hoop “N” and “C” initial earrings by Argento Vivo, a silver body chain by Jacquie Aiche, a silver black diamond pave lip ring by Gabriela Artigas and black Stuart Weitzman heels.
As for people comparing Noah to her big sister (and Billboard‘s most recent cover star) Miley, Lopez thinks that “Noah naturally has a unique style and is different from her sisters. I believe that we’ve been able to show people they are separate and both unique in their own ways.”
The MTV Movie & TV Awards airs at 8 p.m. ET.
