British indie act Noah and the Whale has announced that they have split up after an “incredible eight years together.”
The London-based five-piece band first came to prominence in 2008 with its winsome breakthrough single “5 Years Time,” which was a top 10 hit in the U.K. The group went on to release four studio albums, the last being 2013’s critically-acclaimed Heart of Nowhere, which debuted at No. 13 in the U.K. albums chart.
Although Noah and the Whale’s U.S. profile never grew to the same level as they enjoyed back home, the band’s third album Last Night on Earth did crack the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 135. The quintet, led by frontman Charlie Fink, also scored three entries on the Heatseekers Albums tally and through regular touring had built up a loyal live following in the States.
News of their break-up came via the band’s official Facebook page, which carried the following statement.
“Dear Friends. Noah and the Whale have decided to call it a day. We have had an incredible eight years together and are immensely grateful to everyone who has helped us along the way. There are too many people to mention in this short message but we would like to take this opportunity to give special thanks to all of our amazing fans, who have supported us so magnificently over the years and made everything possible. Love, NATW.”
All five members have now launched their own websites and are believed to be working on solo projects.
