Blu Cantrell’s “Breathe” featuring Sean Paul (Arista) continues to repel all threats to its supremacy on the U.K. singles chart as it started a fourth week at No. 1. Eva Cassidy’s “American Tune” (Blix St./Hot) began a second week atop the album chart, on which Elbow’s “Cast of Thousands” (V2) was the only newcomer within the top-20, at No. 7.
New challengers to Cantrell’s title included London-born vocalist Lemar, a former finalist on the BBC’s “Fame Academy” TV talent series, whose debut single “Dance (With U)” (Sony) entered at No. 2. Girls Aloud, the female winners of “Popstars: The Rivals” last year, arrived at No. 3 with their third hit, “Life Got Cold” (Polydor). There was a No. 10 start for Good Charlotte’s “The Anthem” (Epic) and a career-best No. 11debut for the Libertines’ “Don’t Look Back Into the Sun” (Rough Trade).
Radiohead’s “Go To Sleep” (Parlophone) entered at No. 12, with the drum and bass crossover “Barcelona” by Austrian-based D Kay & Epsilon featuring Stamina MC close behind at No. 14. Also new inside the top-20 were “Fix Up Look Sharp” (XL Recordings) by rapper Dizzee Rascal at No. 17 and “Stop” (Virgin) by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club at No. 19. Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan charted more modestly at No. 27 with his second solo single, “I Need You” (Mute), which follows his No. 18 entry from June, “Dirty Sticky Floors.”
Beneath “American Tune” on the album chart, the self-titled debut set by boy trio Busted on Universal-Island rallied with 6-2 climb, while “Permission To Land” (Must Destroy/Atlantic) by the Darkness rose 10-3. “Greendale” by Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Reprise) made a No. 24 start, while publicity ahead of the start of the U.K. leg of the Rolling Stones’ Licks tour helped the “40 Licks” collection back onto the chart at No. 54.
Evanescence took advantage of the customarily quiet August sales pattern to continue its second run atop the European Top 100 Albums chart with “Fallen” (Wind-Up/Epic), while Lumidee’s “Never Leave You (Uh Ooh, Uh Oooh!)” (MCA/Universal) jumps 5-1 on the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles survey, after a 3-1 climb in Holland and 7-3 increase in Germany.
