Former American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe is set to return for one last round for the show’s farewell season, according to Variety.
Lythgoe — who departed the show after its 12th season — was invited to participate by Fremantle Media. Executive producer Trish Kinane will serve as the showrunner, replacing Per Blankens, who bowed out after seasons 13 and 14.
In a statement, Lythgoe said he is “delighted and proud to rejoin the Idol team in order to create what is sure to be the most memorable and spectacular finales in all of television history.”
Kinane adds: “Nigel is an incredibly talented producer who helped make Idol an iconic television show. He was part of our Idol family for many years and I’m delighted that he is joining our team for the final episode of the farewell season on Fox. It’s going to be an amazing finale to celebrate Idol’s rich and ongoing legacy.”
Speaking to Billboard this summer, Lythgoe waxed nostalgic about his time on the show.
“I brought the show over here. It is my baby,” he said. “I want to be there when they put it to pasture for a little while.”
