One of the greatest stimulants for creative growth can be cross-genre collaboration, and Nicole Moudaber knows first hand. She recently got in the studio with alt-rocker Skin for a five-track release called Breed. It’s dark, brooding, and sly, a powerful piece of work from two strong women not afraid to push music’s boundaries nor their own.

“Putting (our two sounds) together was very challenging for me, not only creatively but also financially,” Moudaber says in an email interview. “I funded the whole project. We have two videos in the market, ‘Someone Like You‘ and ‘You Like This,‘ which I funded personally. Creatively it was challenging because I’ve never worked with songwriters of that caliber, and so I learned a lot throughout the process.”
A true labor of love, Breed took more than a year and a half of work before the artists gave it the final seal of approval. The results were more than validating.
“When I presented it to the Grammy’s it got accepted,” Moudaber says. “That means a lot because that is a stamp of approval of the credibility and quality of the project. The end result was incredible, it was tough but we made it!”
Hot Creator: The Dance World According to Jamie Jones
The pair follow the work with a star-studded remix package to be released on Mood Records Sept. 2. Moudaber hand picked the remixers and put a lot of thought into which songs would fit best with and take the most from each artist’s style. Everyone featured on the EP is a close personal friend and collaborator. Jamie Jones was one of the first to come to mind, and when Moudaber sent him “Don’t Talk To Me I’m Dancing,” he jumped at the bit.
“We’ve both been playing it a lot,” she says. “He even sends me little video clips of him playing it in various clubs. It’s very ‘Jamie Jones;’ very techy, housey, dirty. It’s just amazing.”
Nicole Moudaber Premieres Video For New Single With Skin ‘Someone Like You’
This is not the end of Nicole and Skin. It’s truly only the beginning.
“We definitely have plans to do more songs next year, it’s just a matter of locking in the right time to do it,” Moudaber says. “It’s definitely going to be different. We keep pushing boundaries and we will see what we can come up with, only time will tell! I get so many ideas and she gets so many ideas. We swapped music the whole time while making the EP, and so the next one is also likely to be a long process.”
