“Everything in Trinidad reminds me of my family that is no longer here,” an emotional Minaj says as her eyes begin to water when the interviewer asks her questions about her grandmother, eventually crying uncontrollably. “A lot of times when you’re from the islands your parents will leave and then send for you because it’s easier when they’ve established themselves… I thought it would be two days but it turned into two years without my mother.”

On her ideas of what the United States would be like, Nicki says “I thought it was going to be like a castle, white picket fence — like a fairy tale. When I got off the plane it was cold. I remember the smell, I could always remember the smell of the snow. I’d never seen snow.”
