Dear pals Niall Horan and Shawn Mendes jumped at the opportunity to celebrate their “mad friendship” in a recent interview, and in spite of their super-stardom, it’s clear they’re just two normal buds who love watching TV together and sending each other goofy notes on Twitter, just like your average BFFs.
Backstage at BBC Music’s Biggest Weekend on Sunday (May 27), Horan and Mendes, who both performed at the fest, teamed up for a rare joint Q&A and laughed through the whole thing. In the clip, Mendes details how they first met, which neither of them can really remember but apparently happened at the American Music Awards — and their first hang involved some “flirsty” messages on Twitter.
“The first time we met, which we’re unsure about, I think it was at the American Music Awards,” Mendes recalls. “We were DMing super-flirtsy, back and forth.” Horan’s first impression of Mendes was that he was “the essence of innocence, extremely Canadian, just a very, very sweet guy.” The topic of a collaboration — one that’s been on the table for awhile now — comes up, and Horan and Mendes both confirm that, no, they’re not working on anything at the moment.
“People are always, like, trying to get us to do a song together,” says Horan. “Anywhere I go: ‘We hear you and Shawn Mendes are doing something?’ We’re actually not!” Mendes concedes that could change: “We might one day.”
Watch their adorable chat — which includes Mendes roasting Horan for how much he loves golf, and the both of them picking favorite songs the other one wrote — in full below.
Isn’t this just the cutest bromance, ever?
And COULD there be a collaboration in the future?
