He sat down Dermot O’Leary of the Audible Original podcast People, Just People on Tuesday (March 23) to discuss the constant hustle and bustle he and the rest of his bandmates adopted at the very beginning of their career, especially around the time they released their debut single (and first top 5 Billboard Hot 100 hit) “What Makes You Beautiful.” Their early U.K. and European promo runs, from Manchester to Milan, exposed him to the “madness.”
“We were in Duomo in the middle of Milan City Center outside the cathedral, and there were just thousands. They’re banging on the car windows,” Horan said. “[It’s] the first time I’d seen proper hysteria.”
When O’Leary asked if he had ever felt like a “prisoner” during those times, the “Nice to Meet Ya” singer replied, “A couple of times,” especially when he and the boys wanted to take casual strolls around the cities they were visiting on a daily basis. He later recalled getting into Lima, Peru, at 1 a.m. for a stop during the boy band’s first all-stadium tour, the Where We Are Tour, in 2014.
“We’re driving from the airport to the hotel, and we see a shopping center. And me and Louis [Tomlinson] and Liam [Payne], we’re like, ‘C’mon, when we get up tomorrow morning, let’s get up and have a little stroll around there,'” he said. “The next morning, we woke up, and me and Louis were playing Fifa in the room. And Liam comes in and goes, ‘All right, let’s go.’ And Louis still had his curtains pulled, and then Louis just goes, ‘Just have a look out that window.’ And he opened the curtains. And the police had done a head count and there was 10,000 on the street outside the hotel. He’s like, ‘Well, that’s not happening!'”
