It’s only natural that NGHMTRE would be feeling nostalgic this week.
The rising Los Angeles producer — born Tyler Marenyi — just released his breakout trap bomb “Street” on Diplo‘s Mad Decent, finally giving fans a track that captured imaginations after Skrillex debuted it as an ID in his show-stopping Ultra performance. With performances at Lollapalooza, TomorrowWorld and Mad Decent Block Party looming, Marenyi has undeniable momentum at the moment.
Billboard Dance Picks: Listen to Calvin Harris, NGHTMRE, Elderbrook & More
While the up-and-comer may now be known for booming 808s and crushing synths, he was actually raised on alternative rock. Take a walk down memory lane with him by listening to the Guest Playlist he curated for Billboard Dance of his favorite middle school jams.
Red Hot Chili Peppers – “Scar Tissue”
“Anthony Kiedis is one of my favorite vocalists of all time and RHCP is one of my favorite bands of all time. I was obsessed with all their musicm and then when I was 16 they dropped Stadium Arcadium. I listened to every song on that album probably 50 times. Those guys are all so talented, especially the group that was together when that album dropped. They were one of the first huge concerts I ever saw too. My good friend and I managed to sneak onto the floor of their stadium show, and it was a night I will never forget. I think I started tearing up when they played scar tissue.”
Arctic Monkeys – “Old Yellow Bricks”
“The Favourite Worst Nightmare album that these guys dropped when I was in high school was another one of my favorites. “Old Yellow Bricks” was my favorite from the album. I can remember driving to high school and listening to it pretty much every day junior year.”
Radiohead – “Reckoner”
“Whenever I was upset or stressed in high school this was my go to song to sit and get lost in. I would just go sit in my car, turn this song on, close my eyes and get lost in it. Radiohead is so incredibly talented and have a way of making tracks that really suck you in.”
Muse – “Time Is Running Out”
“These guys rocked so incredibly hard. This was another one of the first concerts I ever attended. The vocal on this track has never left my memory. So powerful.”
Blink-182 – “All The Small Things”
“I can distinctly remember my cousin showing me this song when I was probably only 10 years old. My mom got upset that he was showing me such rebellious music at such a young age, so I had to listen to it when she wasn’t around.”
