Today, Fast Company shared a profile written about two former Google employees who want to replace bodegas with vending machine pantries called Bodega, filled with non-perishable items, hoping to make bodegas extinct. If that idea sounds crazy, it’s because it kind of is.
Who can replace the haven that bodegas are during nights out when you get the munchies, or the rapport with your bodega guy who always knows exactly what you want and asks about your day? Bodegas are a pinnacle part of any community in big cities like New York and Los Angeles, and are often run by immigrants who make their living this way.
With the elimination of the beloved corner stores looming, people weren’t super thrilled about this new idea — and took to Twitter to call out the new machine.
See some of their reactions below.
You not getting one magnum, a chopped cheese sangwich and a Dutch from a bodega box foh b

Weird that they’re calling this heinous vending machine “Bodega” and not “Gentrification Box” https://t.co/xPCozclRRD

Wealthy tech bros are so uncomfortable interacting w working class POC that they think a glorified vending machine is better than a bodega. https://t.co/wPWhfkwBrx

it’s blatant. they want the convenience of the bodega without having to interact with the people whose neighborhood they invaded.

I would eat off the floor of the sketchiest bodega in NYC before I bought something from some tech dipshit’s cabinet.

My own mother won’t make me a bacon egg and cheese at 4am while drunk. Don’t tell me my bodega don’t love me. https://t.co/GMN7QdI6DN
