Veteran electro/rock outfit the Prodigy has penned a new song, “Shadow,” for use in the eagerly anticipated exclusive Xbox 360 “Project Gotham Racing 4” (PGR4) game, in stores Oct. 2.
“We had this idea floating around for a while unfinished,” group member Liam Howlett tells Billboard.com. “When we saw the rough video for ‘PGR4,’ it felt special and inspired us to finish it off. The pace and intensity of the game fit with the tune, and the more people speeding to our music, the better.”
The tune is one of some 61 available in the game. Instead of the prior installment of the game’s separate playlists for each international track location, there are now genre playlists with complete gamer access.
“Some key changes have been made as to how music playback in-game works,” notes Kristofor Mellroth, audio lead at Microsoft Games’ Bizarre Creations studio. “We now continue the track through races so players will hear the entire song. As an example, ‘Shadow’ remixes on the fly as you progress through the front end, and also has some algorithms to remix itself if left idle.”
“We also enabled the [Xbox controller] D-pad to skip tracks, and the game allows playlist editing in the music menu for players to customize their PGR4 music experience,” he adds.
The game also features music from Wolfmother, Incubus, Disturbed, Lily Allen, Lady Sovereign, My Chemical Romance, the Shins, the Roots, Crystal Method and Goldfrapp.
And although a companion soundtrack CD was released with the “PGR3” game, there is none planned for the new edition, according to Mellroth. “The complete soundtrack will be on the Microsoft Zune music service, with digital downloads available in the future,” he says.
