More Meghan On The Way?
A second LP by best new artist winner Meghan Trainor is tentatively due in May, say sources. One song, likely to be called “No,” has the makings of an “All About That Bass” sequel, with the lyrics “My name is ‘no’/My number is ‘no.’ ”
1D’s Valentine’s Day Daddy
One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson and his new girlfriend, The Originals actress Danielle Campbell, spent part of their Valentine’s Day at the Feb. 14 party co-hosted by music publisher Primary Wave and Candy Crush Jelly Saga at the London Hotel in West Hollywood. That same day, Tomlinson’s ex Briana Jungwirth had posted a photo of their infant son Freddie, who was born on Jan. 2, with the caption, “couldn’t have asked for a better valentine,” and while Campbell stood by silently, Tomlinson told Overheard that his little one “is great!” though he agreed that caring for a newborn is a lot of work. “I Bet” singer Ciara hosted the event — she told Overheard her father is a “huge” Candy Crush fan — which was also attended by rocker Melissa Etheridge and her wife Linda Wallem and CeeLo Green, his fiancé Shani James and their dog Harrison Zoolander (aka ZU).
Saint Motel To Release My Type EP Again — And Again
A/J Jackson, the lead singer for the Los Angeles indie pop band Saint Motel was among the musical artists getting his freak on to Missy Elliott’s full-bore performance at Warner Music Group’s post-Grammy Awards party. Jackson, who was dancing and jumping during Elliott’s performance of “Get Ur Freak On,” told Overheard that the band is planning to release three special editions of its 2014 My Type EP before putting out their major label album debut. Jackson says that the first EP will be “a lounge piano version” of My Type, which two additional musically different interpretations of the buzz-generating record to come.
Elle King’s Oh! Moment
“Ex’s and Oh’s” singer Elle King put a blunt spin on her Grammy nominations for Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song at OK! Magazine and Icelandic Glacial’s Feb. 12 pre-awards part at Lure nightclub in Hollywood. King’s friend, Dancing with the Stars champ Rumer Willis introduced the newly-engaged singer, who told the crowd, “I wrote a song about being a whore and I was nominated for two Grammys!” before singing a soulful version of the hit single.
Mark Ronson’s Busy Grammys Weekend
Record of the Year Grammy winner Mark Ronson was one popular guy on the pre-awards party circuit. During the cocktail hour at Clive Davis’ packed annual pre-Grammy party at the Beverly Hilton, rock legends Paul Stanley of Kiss and Alice Cooper were among the music vets who spent time schmoozing with Ronson before the DJ and producer of “Uptown Funk!” headed to Club James in Beverly Crest to DJ with Jamie xx at marketing and branding agency The dFm’s pre-Grammy party. The event drew a hip crowd that included Miguel, Florence Welch, Lorde, Fetty Wap, Diplo and D.R.A.M., whom Ronson invited to sing. Ever the producer, Ronson had an associate roaming the room with an iPad to adjust the sound levels throughout the cement-walled club.
Three nights earlier, Ronson DJ’d the Emporio Armani Sounds’ party at the fashion label’s Los Angeles boutique. The Killers’ Brandon Flowers also performed to a starry crowd that included Randy Jackson, Skillrex, Machine Gun Kelly, Diplo, Leon Bridges, Nicole Scherzinger and Ryan Seacrest, who introduced a tall blond woman to Overheard as “my girlfriend,” only to have her reply, “We just met.”
Rihanna and Adele Go Rogue
Divas had a bad day at the Grammys. Rihanna canceled her performance because of bronchitis, just hours after a rehearsal in which she “absolutely killed” new song “Kiss It Better,” says a source. Adele, meanwhile, sang off-key due to a mic mishap. Columbia execs at Staples Center were visibly upset, as was the singer herself, who skipped the Sony afterparty at the Bel Air Hotel.
Colbert Opens For Hamilton
The Grammys were treated to a live telecast of hip-hop musical Hamilton (which won Best Musical Theater Album), but only the crowd at Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theater got to see Stephen Colbert goofing off at a run-through beforehand. After flubbing his intro to the segment, he joked, “It’s hard to hear when someone is in my ear, uh, dropping bars.” Later, he aimed a finger gun at Leslie Odom Jr., who plays Alexander Hamilton killer Aaron Burr.
