The newly minted Japanese girl group STU48 released the music video for their major debut single, “Kurayami,” on Sunday (Dec. 24).
The sixth domestic AKB48 sister group was officially formed in March, and is based in seven prefectures located in the Setouchi region of Japan.
The music video was shot on location at Ohmishima Island and Hakata Island in Ehime Prefecture over the course of two days and depicts the lives of ordinary high school girls against the panoramic backdrop of the tranquil Inland Sea.
The title of the song means “darkness,” which might sound incongruous for a girl group’s debut, but leader Nana Okada comments that the song is actually about the light at the end of the tunnel.
“It’s a song filled with hope,” she says. “Sometimes you can get into a dark mood in your everyday life, but I think there’s always a light and a right way to proceed. It’s a song that anyone can relate to.”
STU48 will release their major debut single Jan. 31.
