Although never widely distributed outside its native Germany, legendary ’70s Krautrock act Neu! has been credited with influencing everything from punk to electronica. The pioneering rhythms and sparse atmospherics of guitarist Michael Rother and drummer Klaus Dinger have been reflected in the works of David Bowie, the Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Stereolab, and Tortoise, among others. Out of print in the U.S. for 20 years, Neu! (1972), Neu!2 (1973), and Neu!75 (1975) are now restored in these reissues to the original visions of the albums, complete with Spartan artwork. Given the current post-rock leanings of such bands as Radiohead and the continuing appeal of electronic music, Neu! sounds particularly vital. The debut set remains the classic, while Neu!2—which features only 20 minutes of new material coupled with sped-up and slowed-down alternate versions—is credited as an early example of remixing. Neu!75 includes the massively influential proto-punk track “Hero.”—BG
