Willie Nelson’s first fundraising concert for Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich will come Jan. 3 a the Austin (Texas) Music Hall. Billed as an evening of acoustic music with Nelson and friends, the event will also feature frequent Dave Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds and singer/songwriter Michelle Shocked.
Organizers promise “numerous special guests worlds of music, film and politics” will be on hand at the event.
Nelson had originally planned to stage his first fundraiser for the Ohio Congressman in September, but that event was canceled in order to stage events that would generate momentum closer to the primary season. The first presidential primary, the Iowa Caucus, will be held Jan. 19.
Nelson has been a vocal supporter of Kucinich, an underdog candidate who was recently profiled in Rolling Stone. “I normally do not get too heavily involved in politics,” Nelson says in a statement, “but this is more about getting involved with America than with politics.”
Reynolds, who wore a “Kucinich for President” T-shirt during a recent “Saturday Night Live” appearance with Matthews, adds, “I believe Dennis Kucinich is the only clear voice for peace and compassion in an otherwise hopeless, fake, made for TV political arena. He is truly the embodiment of what a caring public servant can be, a man of principal above politics.”
