In an alternate universe somewhere, Neil Diamond is touring under the name “Ice Charry.”
Before the release of Diamond’s debut, The Feel of Neil Diamond, in 1966, the singer thought long and hard about changing his name. He told Jimmy Fallon he came up with two options: Noah Kaminsky and Ice Charry. Watch the interview below.
Diamond describes these two choices as “absolutely brilliant and perfect.” Kaminsky “was Biblical,” he tells Fallon. “It had depth, it had character.” He has a harder time remembering the justification for Ice Charry. “Something from Elvis or something?” The Feel of Ice Charry sounds like a very different record — and the song “Cherry, Cherry” from a guy named Charry would have been a whole ‘nother thing.
