Four members of SM Entertainment’s NCT dropped a brand new music video for “Yestoday” on Sunday (April 1).
Released as one of the tracks on the NCT 2018 Empathy album last month, “Yestoday” features NCT rappers Taeyong, Mark, and Lucas with vocalist Doyoung under the NCT U rotational unit title. An ambient hip-hop track, the trio are put to the forefront of as they reflect on regrets and past memories relating to love and their youth, with Doyoung’s smooth hook of a chorus drawing the song together over a funky beat.
“Yestoday” features lyrics penned by Mark and Taeyong, and includes both Korean and English verses from the four men.
Fantastical, neon animations and animals enhance the mood-lit video, which features the three rappers delivering their rhymes amid busy, colorful sets enhanced by mood lighting and disco balls. Doyoung alone, as the connector, appears primarily in black-and-white as drawings alter his image; only the final rendition of the hook verse sees him joining the rest of the quartet amid the darkly-lit set.
Within 24 hours of its release, “Yestoday” saw over 1.6 million views on YouTube.
Less of a typical boy band and more of a crew with multiple units and line-ups, NCT is the latest boy band from SM Entertainment, the most prominent K-pop company in South Korea. With a limitless number of members and lofty goals that will potentially reach into a variety of different international markets, NCT 2018 Empathy is the first album to see all 18 current members of NCT featured on one album together.
The music video for “Yestoday” is the fifth to come out of Empathy, following NCT U’s “Boss” and “Baby Don’t Stop,” NCT DREAM’s “Go,” and NCT 127’s “Touch.” One more video for “Black In Black,” featuring all 18 members of NCT 2018, is expected to be released in the future. Upon its release, Empathy peaked at No. 5 on the World Albums chart.
