Come on, baby, let’s do the Twist … and help fight childhood cancer.
Wednesday (Sept. 21) marks National Twist Day, as it’s being promoted on pop/R&B legend Chubby Checker‘s official Facebook page. Checker, whose smash “The Twist” first topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a week on Sept. 19, 1960, and again for two more weeks in January 1962 — sparking the song’s coronation as the Hot 100’s all-time No. 1 hit — hopes to get as many people in the U.S. as possible doing The Twist at least once on Sept. 21; have radio stations, no matter their format, play “The Twist” that day; have TV stations film people doing the Twist; and have people post comments and their videos twisting on Facebook.
The goal? To raise awareness, and funds, to help battle childhood cancer.
September was chosen for National Twist Day in part because it is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Every day in the U.S., 36 children are diagnosed with cancer.
Checker has also joined with non-profit Mascots for a Cure to launch the Twist Challenge. Along the lines of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, the hope is for celebrities, media and others to raise further awareness (via viral videos) to help fight childhood cancer, with people encouraged to twist and post their videos on social media. “We’re hoping to get everyone involved,” Checker said in a statement. “We’re looking for all people who want to help do something extraordinary.”
Also in honor of National Twist Day and the Twist Challenge, Checker has released a newly remixed and mastered version of “The Twist.”
