While last week’s “American Idol” elimination saw Casey Abrams saved by the judges, tonight’s (Mar. 31) episode sent two contestants packing, with nine remaining.
‘American Idol’: Hailey Reinhart, Stefano Langone Nail Elton John Classics
The show’s pattern of female eliminations continued as Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo were eliminated following their less-than-stellar takes on Elton John classics last night (Megia with “Daniel” and Adedapo with “I’m Still Standing”).
Adedapo and Megia faced Paul McDonald in the bottom three, but the two ladies received the least of this week’s 55 million votes. As revealed during last Thursday’s elimination, the entire top 11 will take part in this summer’s “American Idol” live tour.
Performances from various contestant groupings, as well as Fantasia and will.i.am featuring Jamie Foxx, preceded the episode’s double elimination. Country crooners Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina paired up for Carrie Underwood’s take on Randy Travis’ “I Told You So,” while Naima was “Solid” alongside Jacob Lusk.
Katy Perry’s No. 1 hit “Teenage Dream” saw a harmonized re-imagining from Thia, Haley Reinhart and Pia Toscano. Finally, Paul McCartney’s “Band on the Run” inspired a vocal and instrumental collaboration among James Durbin, Paul McDonald, Casey Abrams and Stefano Langone.
Meanwhile, winner Fantasia Barrino — wearing a Jessica Rabbit-esque gown — performed her new single, “Collard Greens & Cornbread.” The “Idol” season three winner added a loving shout-out to Steven Tyler toward the song’s end.
Will.i.am and Jamie Foxx continued the foodie theme, performing their new song “Hot Wings” on the “Idol” stage. An accompanying, highly-spirited dance troupe channeled the animated film “Rio,” in which “Hot Wings” — as well as Foxx and will.i.am — appears.
