What are you doing this Memorial Day? If you’re an EDM fan in New York, you are officially spoiled. Live Nation’s Insomniac and SFX’s ID&T announced their lineups for their competing events this May 24-25. If there were any lingering questions about competition between the two rave giants, they were answered today when Mysteryland announced its lineup with EDC hurriedly following hours later.
Mysteryland, a festival brand ID&T launched in Holland in 1993, makes its American debut in Bethel Woods, NY with six stages, including three curated by SFX-owned Made Event’s techno-saturated Sunday School brand and one from hardstyle-themed festival Q-Dance. Headliners include Steve Aoki, Kaskade, Dillon Francis, Moby, Showtek, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Nicky Romero with Romero curating an opening party on May 23.
Insomniac Events’ Electric Daisy Carnival started in Los Angeles in 1997 and has since expanded to seven markets, including the New York City metro area starting in 2012, where it returns to the MetLife stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Headliners include Tiesto, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, Krewella, Steve Angello and Martin Garrix.
Last August, SFX and Live Nation announced plans to throw events in upstate New York over Memorial Day weekend. Ultimately, Live Nation’s Insomniac’s efforts to host the New York iteration of EDC were denied by the city of Saugerties, home of the 1994 Woodstock festival. SFX’s ID&T, meanwhile, locked in the original 1964 Woodstock site of Bethel Woods.
Even with 100 miles between them, two festivals featuring megastar lineups on the same day will test the value of each promoter’s respective brands. Murmurs of market saturation have already started to dog both companies as the festival calendar continues to fill up and EDM’s core demographic (18-24 year-olds) don’t have the unlimited financial resources to attend every event.
