Mxmtoon is having a fever dream, and we’ve all feeling a bit fragile.
The Brooklyn-based, Oakland-native’s new song “Fever Dream” dropped at midnight, along with a super-cute clip featuring home videos of the artist as a school kid performing on stage. She’s clearly no newcomer to showbiz.
The 19-year-old singer and songwriter (who also goes by her real name Maia) is coming off a breakthrough year in which she released her debut full-length album The Masquerade, released a graphic novel to accompany it, The Adventures of Mxmtoon: The Masquerade, and embarked on a sold-out North American tour. Her 2018 debut EP blossom clocked up more than 100 million plays on Spotify alone, and she went on to join forces with the streaming giant on a new podcast series.
There’s more music coming. Maia is currently working on a pair of back-to-back EPs due out later this year, the first taste of which is “Fever Dream,” a calming, delicate observation of life and our place in the world.
“The day I wrote this song, I knew it meant the world to me,” she writes. “I’m beyond excited to share it with you all now and to finally allow it into the world for everyone’s ears. When thinking about the visualizer for ‘Fever Dream’ I thought basing it off of the cover art would be a good idea. compiling and editing home videos from my tiny human days was so much fun, but it also made me think.”
