Mutya Keisha Siobhan, the U.K. vocal group consisting of the three original members of the Sugababes, has finally released the full version of its debut single, much to the delight of the ravenous pop blogosphere. “Flatline” premiered online on Thursday (July 4), and will be released to digital retailers on Sept. 1.
Produced by Dev Hynes, who co-produced Sky Ferreira’s “Everything is Embarrassing” and helmed Solange’s “True” EP, “Flatline” was written by MKS and finds the trio coming to grips with the end of a relationship over trickling beats and delightfully epic “Whoa-oh-oh” cries. When the three singers combine for the chorus, “Flatline” morphs into one of the most immediately affecting pop singles of 2013, and certainly the best one that uses the word “miscellaneous” in its lyrics.

Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy formed Sugababes in 1998 and released its debut album “One Touch” in 2000. Over the years, each singer left the act for various reasons, only to be replaced by another performer. By 2010, all three of the original singers had stepped away from the act. The three original Sugababes reunited in 2012 as Mutya Keisha Siobhan, while the current lineup of Sugababes most recently released an album in 2010, titled “Sweet 7.”
Since then, MKS has teased pop fans with new material, releasing a remix of Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank)” titled “Lay Down in Swimming Pools” and remixing songs like Phoenix’s “Entertainment.” In early June, “Flatline” was revealed to be the name of the group’s first single, and the first taste of the group’s debut album as Mutya Keisha Siobhan.
The trio is headed to Los Angeles later this month to film the video for “Flatline,” and is scheduled to perform at Brighton & Hove Pride in the U.K. on Aug. 3. It may be a while before Mutya Keisha Siobhan is releasing a full album and performing in the U.S., but until then, feast upon the arresting “Flatline.”
