Each year, the Music Entrepreneur Conference (MEcon) in New York City offers guidance for those looking to carve out independent careers in the music industry through talks with artists, producers, music business educators, entrepreneurs and financial experts.
Due to the pandemic, this year’s iteration will take place virtually on Dec. 11 and 12, with a particular focus on “COVID-proofing your music business” along with the usual workshops, coaching and networking opportunities offering strategies on how to build a stable career in the industry.
Spearheaded by MEcon co-founders Rachel Karry and Jalen James Acosta – who also run the full-service multimedia and entertainment company World Artists United, which is host and producer of the conference – this year’s featured speakers including musician and entrepreneur Scott Page; producer and “artivist” Jerry Wonda; music rights expert and music technology leader Virginie Berger; former NBA player, entrepreneur and music artist Metta Sandiford-Artest; music finance and analytics expert and CEO John Funge; and Billboard‘s international editor Alexei Barrionuevo.
Others scheduled to participate this year include Ariel Hyatt, John Petrocelli, Mark Frieser, Paul Wiltshire, Suz Paulinski, Joep van Leijsen, Oye Akindeinde, Jeff Hammer, Tara Gupta, Channing Moreland, Kwasi Asare, Kedar Frederic, SiouxZ and Paolo Privitera.
Topics at the 2020 conference will include thinking and communicating like a leader; up-leveling your mindset for success; generating new revenue streams; connecting and nurturing superfans; growing an international network; mastering music production; building brand equity; understanding your audience; and producing content on a budget.
Also on offer this year will be sessions outlining strategies for industry executives on how to enhance their leadership skills, while music technology startups will be given the opportunity to share their innovations, gain industry expertise and meet investors. In addition, artists will have the chance to apply for money from The Music Fund — which offers musicians the chance to sell a percentage of their royalties in exchange for cash up-front — while financial services company Northwestern Mutual will be on hand to dispense advice and information about financial literacy in the music industry.
