Mura Masa is on a big press push. His self-titled album drops Friday, July 14, and as any good London-based boy would, he came through Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 studio to play a few unreleased tracks and a very special cover. He brought his electric marimba with him, along with a full band of friends — including singer-songwriter NAO, who provides vocals for his track “Firefly.”
NAO helped Masa close the show with a tropical take on Calvin Harris‘ soul-funk single “Slide.” Her high, cheeky sound is perfect for the chipmunk sample, and sounds smooth when reinterpreting original singer Frank Oceans’ laid-back verses. Masa himself works the bass guitar into an anchor. It’s a cool take on a summer anthem.
All this after Mac got the young producer to open up about his work on Mura Masa, the album, and after live performances of never-before-heard tune “Messy Love” (featuring Masa on the mic), and he and NAO’s collab “Firefly.” The “Slide” cover hits around the 19-minute mark. Listen to it below.
