Janet Jackson will be the inaugural honoree of a new MTV special, “mtvICON.” Set to tape March 10 in Los Angeles, the career celebration will feature interviews and performances by a slate of yet-to-be-announced artists who have been influenced by Jackson, who herself will contribute a promised “grand performance” to close the show. An airdate has not yet been set.
“mtvICON” aims to annually recognize an artist who has “made a significant contribution to music, music video, and pop culture, while tremendously impacting the MTV generation.”
“With MTV turning 20 this year, it is both the perfect time for us to honor an artist who has influenced the music industry and pop culture with our inaugural mtvICON tribute,” MTV president Van Toffler said in a statement. “Janet has and continues to change and inspire new music trends worldwide. We’re excited to launch this new music performance event with an artist who has such talent, style and staying power. “
Jackson, who was honored Monday night with the Award Of Merit at the American Music Awards, plans to release a new album and go out on tour later this year.9
