MTV Latin America has postponed its 2005 Video Music Awards Latin America due to the rapidly intensifying force of Hurricane Wilma. The fourth edition of the awards was slated to take tomorrow (Oct. 20) at Playa del Carmen in the Mexican Caribbean but was moved up to today as the storm approached.
While Wilma was not expected to hit Playa del Carmen directly, organizers said in a statement that they felt its effect was “close enough to greatly impact our production.” Safety and security of talent, staff and audience was cited as a “top priority.”
There’s no word yet on when the awards will take place or when the winners will be announced.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said this morning that the storm had developed into the most intense hurricane on record in the Atlantic basin.
