The MTV Australia Video Music Awards (AVMAs) will take place March 2, 2005 at Sydney’s Luna Park fun fair. The inaugural event will be telecast live from the 2,000-capacity Big Top.
Luna Park first opened in 1935 and has since become an iconic feature of Sydney Harbor’s northern foreshore. The venue has recently undergone a significant refurbishment.
“To stage a show of this scale at such a fantastic location is more than ideal,” says MTV Networks Australia managing director Nigel Robbins. “With the glorious setting of Sydney Harbor as a backdrop, we couldn’t ask for a better setting than Luna Park to host the very first AVMAs,” he adds.
Nominations will be determined via a voting body made up of MTV viewers, members of the music industry and journalists. All but one of the 13 awards will be voted for by MTV viewers via SMS, email, fax and phone; the VH1 Lifetime Achievement Award is decided by MTV.
MTV Australia is a 24-hour music and entertainment network targeting the 12-32 demographic on the Foxtel, Optus, Austar, Foxtel Digital, and Austar Digital platforms.
