Movement, Detroit’s long-running electronic music festival, announces the second phase of its roster today, adding Baauer, Boys Noize, Claude VonStroke, Green Velvet, Just Blaze, Ryan Hemsworth, Tourist and more to a previously announced list that includes Pete Tong, Jamie Jones, Richie Hawtin and a rare live set from Metro Area. Taking place again at Detroit’s Hart Plaza over Memorial Day weekend (May 24-26), Movement is expected to draw more than 100,000 attendees over three days. A complete lineup is below.
What began in 2000 as the Detroit Electronic Music Festival became Movement in 2006, when area event promoter Paxahau took the reins from the festival’s troubled founders. Since then, despite of cutbacks in public services and a depleted urban population, Paxahau and Movement have remained staunch defenders of Detroit’s cultural relevance.
“Much of the world’s electronic dance music has been somehow influenced by the sound of the Detroit,” Paxahau president Jason Huvaere tells Billboard. “The city is the birthplace of techno – the music we grew up to and fell in love with over 25 years ago. We are very passionate about this city and the incredible talent here – something we’re committed to highlighting every year at the festival.”
Indeed, between acts like Julio Bashmore and Tiga are the city’s techno godfathers Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig, as well as lesser-known Motor City tastemakers like Mike Huckaby and Stacey “Hotwaxxx” Hale.
“The festival was established as a way to celebrate the talents of local, Detroit-based artists who had gained international notoriety and success for their music,” says Huvaere. “We have carried on the tradition of representing underground artists and rising stars, as well as paying homage to musical icons in their own right.”
According to Huvaere, Paxahau’s commitment to the city itself has allowed it to expand the lineup each year to create what he calls a “steady mix” of both international and local talent.
“We’re always excited to have guys like Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox and Claude VonStroke back,” he says. “They always put on a great show. We’re also looking forward to checking out first-time Movement performers, such as Boys Noize, Pete Tong, Jamie xx and Bonobo, just to name a few.”
While some festivals find themselves at odds with local governments and neighboring citizens, don’t expect any noise complaints from Detroiters this May.
“Movement and Detroit have a very symbiotic relationship that started 14 years ago in Hart Plaza,” Huvaere says. “The residents have a strong sense of pride of what this festival accomplishes in three days – good music, tourism and a huge economic boost.”
