Motown/UME will on Jan. 15 inaugurate the new compilation series, “Love Songs,” with sets by Michael Jackson and Marvin Gaye just in time to set the mood for Valentine’s Day. The compilations will present the artists’ respective romantically themed hits alongside rarer cuts, all of which have been digitally remastered with explanatory liner notes.
Gaye’s “Love Songs: Bedroom Ballads” will include the entire 10-track album “Vulnerable,” which he worked on for 12 years and never saw released in his lifetime. Motown issued the album, which was conceived as a classic-pop showcase for Gaye’s vocals, in 1997, and it subsequently fell out of print. In addition to “Vulnerable,” “Bedroom Ballads” will feature songs from Gaye’s albums “Let’s Get It On,” “I Want You,” “In Our Lifetime,” and “Here, My Dear.”
Jackson’s “Love Songs” compilation includes soulful romantic selections from both his early solo career and his work with the Jackson 5. The 14-track album will include out-of-print tracks such as the Jackson 5 cover of Ray Charles “Fool for You” and the original single mix of “Who’s Lovin’ You,” previously unavailable on CD.
Also on Jan. 15, Motown/UME will release a revised reissue of Neil Diamond’s 1981 MCA set “Love Songs” and an updated version of the Temptations’ 1995 disc “For Lovers Only.” The latter disc, a collection of standards that has become one of the legendary vocal group’s most critically acclaimed albums, will be repackaged and augmented with a bonus track, the remix of Cole Porter’s “Night and Day” which the group contributed to the 2001 film “What Women Want.”
