After a series of ailments forced him to nix performances across the U.S. and South America last year, Morrissey will return to the States this spring for an extended tour.
The British legend kicks off the trek May 7 in San Jose, followed by May 10 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, wrapping up June 21 in Brooklyn at Barclays Center. In between are 20-plus dates in cities ranging from Denver to Nashville to Boston, as well as often overlooked markets including Flint, Mich. and Hershey, Penn.
Billboard can confirm the full itinerary (below), which was first posted to fan zine True to You. An official announcement is coming Friday morning (Feb. 14).
For two of the shows, Morrissey has enlisted major star-power to open for him: Tom Jones in Los Angeles and Cliff Richard in Brooklyn. Frequent tour mate Kristeen Young, a singer-keyboardist from St. Louis, will open all dates.
“About a month ago, my agent called on the phone and said ‘(Morrissey) invited you to be on the show,'” Richard tells Billboard. “I said, ‘Are you sure?’ I mean, Morrissey and Cliff Richard? We’re poles apart… So I definitely got them to check it out and see if there was any sort of ulterior motive. They came back and said, ‘Morrissey has always been a fan.’ ‘You’re kidding me!’ I don’t really believe that, but I’ll accept it. It’s an exciting opportunity. You never know what’s going to happen in this life of rock ‘n’ roll.”
A bleeding ulcer and a case of Barrett’s esophagus led the former Smiths frontman to cancel numerous concerts in 2013, an eventful year that also saw the release of his best-selling autobiography.
Morrissey recently signed to Harvest Records, an imprint of Capitol, and is working on a new album, the followup to 2009’s “Years of Refusal.”
