When Monstercat’s Twitch account appeared to be hacked last week, it was actually just a clever bit of disruptive marketing.
After the digital label’s regular podcast appeared to fall prey to a cyber attack, to the alarm of its dedicated fanbase (and a Twitch employee who didn’t get the memo), viewers were treated to a sneak peek of a stunning music video from enigmatic new artist Karma Fields.
Watch the full video premiere of Karma Fields’ “Build the Cities,” with Kerli, exclusively on Billboard:
Featuring vocals from Estonia’s Kerli, who recently collaborated with Seven Lions and SNBRN, the song escalates from warm synth pads and urgent arpeggiators into a powerful industrial techno-inspired bass progression.
Created by visual artist Raven Kwok, the unique video was generated by custom systems developed in Java using an Xbox Kinect to map the animation to footage of Kerli singing.
“Every time I run the system, it will produce a different visual outcome due to randomness of the initial parameters,” Kwok says. “So the music video itself is an organized yet unpredicted outcome.”
Described as a “conceptual act” by Monstercat, the Karma Fields project aims to create an immersive audiovisual experience separated from its unknown creator.
“Build the Cities” is available through Monstercat on Monday (March 2).
