The Monkees have returned with their era-defining sound on “She Makes Me Laugh,” the lead single from their upcoming album Good Times! Written by Weezer‘s Rivers Cuomo, the single features jangly guitars and sunny vocals — everything we’ve come to expect from The Monkees.
“I’m super stoked to be writing a song for the Monkees,” Cuomo said to Rolling Stone. “I’ve always identified with their musical aesthetic — the chord changes and melodies.”
Monkees Announce 2016 Tour, New Album Featuring Rivers Cuomo, Ben Gibbard Collabs
Good Times! is their first studio album since 1996’s Justus and the 2012 passing of member Davy Jones. In addition to penning a number of tracks themselves, they’ve enlisted the help of alt and indie elites — there are songwriting credits for Death Cab for Cutie‘s Ben Gibbard and Rogue Wave‘s Zach Rogue. To commemorate their new album and 50th anniversary, the band will tour beginning this May.
