Australian newcomer Missy Higgins and the all-star Wave Aid concert each received a pair of nominations for this year’s Helpmann Awards, to be held August 8 at Star City in Sydney.
The nominations, unveiled today (July 11), cover 39 categories including theater, opera and contemporary music.
The Wave Aid concert, organized by Michael Chugg Entertainment and Mark Pope Management, raised A$2.3 million ($1.7 million) in February for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami. It was held at the Sydney Cricket Ground and featured sets by Midnight Oil, Silverchair, Powderfinger and Higgins.
Wave Aid got a nod in the special events category, while Midnight Oil’s headlining set was nominated for best performance in Australian contemporary concert.
Higgins is up for best performance in Australian contemporary concert and best Australian contemporary concert categories.
The event, now in its fifth year, is organized by the Melbourne-based Australian Entertainment Industry Assn. Ovation cable channel will televise the awards nationally.
