Call us suckers, but the thought of dancing minions is very appealing to us. And the thought of minions doing Zumba is irresistible.
But so it is. Fitness mega brand Zumba has collaborated with Universal to produce an exclusive choreography for “Tiki Tiki Babeloo (Zumba Remix),” one of the songs in the upcoming Despicable Me 3 film. This will be Zumba’s first time collaborating with a movie studio for original music and choreography and highlights how the company is seeking to expand its musical footprint.
“Tiki Tiki Babeloo” was actually created by Universal. “The song at the core of this collaboration is actually a tune our Minions sing to a ukulele strum in the first half of Despicable Me 3,” says Fabian Castro, SVP of multicultural at Universal Pictures. Once Universal and Zumba decided to collaborate, the studio shared the audio with music producer Ricky Luna “with the assignment of creating a Latin rhythm remix in the style and speed needed for Zumba’s exercise routines but maintaining the fun feeling that is identifiable with the Minions and the Despicable Me brand.”

Undeniably, there’s a Latin feel to this campaign.
“There’s always been a certain, yet unintentional, Latin feel to the Minions as their Minionese language seems to have recognizable Spanish words. The DNA of Zumba is also inherently based in Latin rhythms,” admits Castro. “That being said, while the Latin connections in both properties are evident, the Despicable Me x Zumba collaboration, its custom remix song and the Latin-inspired Zumba choreography are universal, will be global in reach and for all to enjoy.”
The idea is to promote the film to Zumba fans. The choreography video and song will live on Zumba’s social platforms, and the choreography will hopefully be organically taught by Zumba’s thousands of instructors around the world.
Zumba says it has more than 15 million class participants each week in 200,000 locations in 186 countries.
