NEW YORK — A group of copyright owners filed an infringement lawsuit on Feb. 22 over Christina Milian’s “Dip It Low.” The Island Def Jam track peaked at No. 5 on The Billboard Hot 100 in August 2004 and was nominated for best rap/sung collaboration at this year’s Grammy Awards.
The suit — filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles by Thomas Turino, Larry Crook and Dan Dickey — claims that a sample of a “central identifying melodic, harmonic and rhythmic component” of the 1983 song “La Sirena” was looped throughout the rap recording without permission.
Named as defendants are the Island Def Jam Music Group, Universal Music & Video Distribution and producers/writers/publishers Teedra Moses d.b.a. Ras N Taj Music, Paul Poli and Paul Poli Music.
The trio seek damages of at least $150,000 per infringement, a declaration of rights, an accounting for all profits and attorneys’ fees.
Island Def Jam and Universal were not available for comment.
