The release of Miley Cyrus’ “Adore You” music video spurs the singer back to No. 1 on Billboard’s Social 50 chart — which ranks the most social artists of the week.
The Social 50 chart tallies the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics provider Next Big Sound.
The rise of Cyrus pushes last week’s No. 1 artist, Justin Bieber, down to No. 2.
Last week, we hypothesized that Bieber’s Christmas day release of his feature film “Believe” could help him sustain a No. 1 placement (and for back-to-back weeks for the first time since the week of August 3). However, the Dec. 26 release of Cyrus’ “Adore You” video on Vevo outshone Bieber — at least in the social space.
“Adore You” is another intimately-shot video, featuring Cyrus between the sheets and in a tub (akin to Rihanna’s “Stay”). While the video was officially released on Dec. 26, it was leaked on Christmas Day which the pop star addressed directly over Twitter.
We all know Smilers would break another record if it wasn’t for the fuck face who leaked my video. Alllllll good! Keep smiling 🙂

The record she’s referring to is the coveted Vevo 24-hour record, which Cyrus currently holds from when “Wrecking Ball” racked up 19.3 million global views on Vevo in just one day after it was released back on Sept 9.
While the leak curbed the video’s ability to break Vevo’s 24-hour record, it still did very well overall.
In the four days of activity included in this week’s Social 50 tracking period (through Dec. 29), the video helped drive an 82% increase in weekly traffic to her channel while simultaneously spurring the addition of 1.1 million new followers across Facebook and Twitter. In the U.S., the video received 6.9 million views, which causes the title to debut at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart and re-enter the Hot 100 at No. 22.
Meanwhile Bieber dips 1-2 on the Social 50, despite a 46% increase in conversation about the artist on Twitter, where he was mentioned 5.2 million times and retweeted more than 3.8 million times over the course of the charting week.
Rihanna (14-3) soars, thanks to the popularity of the “Monster” video which she stars in alongside Eminem, who also rises (7-9). Rihanna returns to the top 10 after a 13% rise in overall weekly conversation (as measured across Facebook and Twitter) leads to 777,000 new fans overall, a 58% increase over the previous week.
Further down the tally, Pentatonix continue their ascent, moving 25-18 on the wings of their video rendition of “I Need Your Love” (originally performed by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding). The video caused a 56% increase in weekly traffic to Pentatonix’s YouTube channel, while the quintet adds 354,000 new fans overall (up 14% from last week).
Harris himself also sees some activity this week, as the dance producer makes a low debut at No. 49 following a steady accruement of fans (he adds 230,000 this week, up 5% from the previous).
Finishing the recap of the top 10, Ariana Grande climbs 6-4 over Katy Perry who remains steady at No. 5. One Direction slides 4-6, while Beyonce descends (3-8). Shakira climbs a notch (10-9) and Taylor Swift rises a rung to No. 10.
