Venezuelan singer-comedian and famed cuatro player Simon Diaz, who first gained attention as host of radio show “The Plainsman,” which led to the release of more than 50 albums of traditional and original compositions, died Feb. 19 at his home in Caracas, Venezuela. He was 85.
Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, a proponent of the new flamenco style and a collaborator with musicians Eric Clapton, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola, died Feb. 25 in Mexico. He was 66.
Wayne Smith, the reggae vocalist whose 1985 single “Under Mi Sleng Teng” helped popularize digital production in the genre, died Feb. 17 in Kingston, Jamaica. He was 48.
