Singer Mike Smith of the Dave Clark Five continues to recover from a fall, but he still has a long way to go. His physician, Dr. Keith McKee, says Smith is paralyzed from the waist down and he has no movement in his right arm. Smith has limited use of his left arm. McKee says he hopes that with time, Smith will have more movement.
Smith suffered spinal cord injuries in a Sept. 12 fall outside his home in Spain. He is currently in a London hospital in very serious condition in an intensive care unit.
Smith has had difficulty breathing, and he was given a tracheotomy so a ventilator could be used. He is able to mouth words and his mental functions are unaffected.
Meanwhile, Smith’s agent says a benefit concert for him is being planned in New York. E Street Band guitarist “Little Steven” Van Zandt and CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” bandleader Paul Shaffer are helping to organize it. Copyright 2003 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
