It’s official: Mija is no longer just a standout dance music producer; she’s a full-fledged artist, and she poured her heart out bare and beautiful on her debut EP How to Measure the Distance Between Lovers.
“This is the first step into what I would consider to be my canon,” Mija is quoted in a press release. “It is not club music, but music that comes from my soul and lays a foundation for who I am as an artist.”
It opens with previously released single “Notice Me,” a jaunty and romantic tune that blends traditional French music style with electronic flourishes, weeping piano melodies and Mija’s own raspy, poetic, vulnerable vocals. It moves next into the darkness of debut single “Bad 4 U,” a song that features guest vocalist Kelli Schaefer and a more house-driven beat, even as it brings a solid dose of experimental atmosphere into its haunting air.
Fans will love the new joints. “5AM in Paris” brings the funk with bass and rhythm, paired with the heavy stillness of those dark morning hours just before the sun rises. It’s got the buzziness of a party-addled brain trying to fall asleep despite the night’s beats still knockin’ in your ears. “Never Forget” plays into alternative roots with muted organic bass and filtered vocals, finishing with a long-held chord and a sweet personalized touch before crumbling into the gritty roar of “Falling apART,” which in turn beautifully melts away into silence.
“Speak to Me” is quite grand, with strings, orchestral percussion, sitar and Spanish guitar, as the young artist begs to feel anything at all. It closes with equal endearment and bitter finality on “The Last Song I Ever Wrote U,” finishing this first chapter of Mija’s brilliant evolution with a real flourishing bang.
The whole work speaks to the strange feeling of loving and losing, balancing your heart between the fantasies we weave and the nagging reality of unknowable truth. It quakes with heartbreak and shines with focused vision. It’s beautiful and strong, even as it celebrates the weaker moments of our hidden lives. It’s beautiful and exciting, and you really should just listen to it for yourself. She self-released it, and she made this fun trailer, which artfully captures the concept in visuals and spoken word.
