The shoes in Collection 2 of Lavati — a luxury men’s footwear worn by the likes of Kevin Hart, Stephen Curry, and Migos’ Offset — are “minimal yet sleek.” As the latest creation from founding designers Davidson Petit-Frere and Yossi Shetrit, this sophomore collection of handcrafted suede Chelsea boots finished off by either a gum-bottom or leather-wooden sole, as well as leather court-top and low-top sneakers, are primarily offered in earth tones ranging from cool grey to Havana brown.
Since starting the company in 2014, Petit-Frere and Shetrit tell Billboard Style that the goal was to come up with “a really clean, modern, minimalistic, and easy [luxury] shoe for anyone of any style to adapt to.” Sharing an identical fashion taste, the duo didn’t care for the “eccentric and trendy” shoes out on the market. Instead they craved for something with a more “debonair, GQ” style while also being comfortable for any occasion. Their debut Collection 1 sharply differed from the current, as it included a popular green court-top and other shoes with outside exteriors contrasting the soles. Shetrit classified their technique as “artisan [and] traditional” with more of a “modern approach.”
Immediately Lavati garnered high profile fans: Topping the list Kevin Hart. Petit-Frere attests that the comedian has “worn every pair” since first seeing the shoes, where he exclaimed “man this is beautiful.” Meanwhile reigning NBA champion Stephen Curry wore a pair of Havana court-top sneakers courtside at the 2016 Finals and a pair of Chelsea boots at this year’s. Appreciating the genuine support of his celebrity muses and influences, Petit-Frere noted that “everyone wears our shoes organically.”
Shetrit was impressed by another client, Offset of Migos, who also happens to be the face of Collection 2. On why they selected the rapper for the role, the designer believes “Migos is original to the style that they’re bringing to hip-hop. They have an elegant style that’s in the same lane as Lavati. Offset is a very stylish guy with a versatile look and he compliments our brand.” Shetrit went on to describe how the photo shoot was “collaborative;” Petit-Frere backing up the experience with “you can see in the photos he’s feeling himself. He knows it’s something different.”
And different is exactly what’s being brought to the table by Lavati. Their Seline Chelsea Boot of Collection 2 sold out in three days as other brands were just catching up to vibrant appeal of the color. Another hot item are the suede Bordeaux Chelsea Boots priced at $595 — the shoes audaciously pull off a color that’s hard to execute in men’s footwear. French Montana donned a pair during his interview photo shoot with Highsnobiety.
Impressed by Lavati, luxury swiss watch brand, Hublot, collaborated with the duo in 2016 to design 100 all black leather sneakers with custom lace tips encrusted by black Swarovski diamonds. The pair flew to Italy to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Hublot’s Big Bang All Black watch, working side by side with the team of the luxury brand to emulate the iconic accessory. DJ Khaled became a lucky fan of Lavati when he was gifted a pair for his birthday. According to Petit-Frere, the moment “helped us solidify ourselves in the industry,” while Shetrit found “the most exciting project” of his career “surreal,” considering Hublot’s logo had appeared on their sneakers.
While Collection 2 is still selling, the designers are finalizing designs and colors for the upcoming Collection 3. The third time around, Shetrit is focused on “the open market for casual niche [being juxtaposed] with something traditional and clean;” Petit-Frere has his eyes on the luxury market’s need for premium trainers. “Everyone is buying the Yeezys (and Jordans) for $200 and reselling them on the market for [over] $1000,” acknowledges the designer. Shetrit agreed, as he focused on the futuristic design and high end material of Lavati’s pricier high end trainers which should be coming out in the next few months.
